A major policy shift is coming to the Houston Police Department. Mayor John Whitmire just announced he signed an executive order limiting HPD's cooperation with federal immigration authorities. In a statement on social media, the mayor said the order directs HPD to no longer contact ICE in an effort to help reduce fear in local communities. Whitmire elaborated that officers will not contact ICE over nonviolent, non-jailable offenses, such as routine traffic stops. He noted the city will still go after individuals who pose a danger, but not those who are just going about their daily lives. The mayor heralded the move as a new model of immigration enforcement following the recent statewide elections, and thanked Police Chief J. Noe Diaz for his collaboration on the policy change.
