Looks much better as a united island?! The island of Cyprus is geopolitically divided into four distinct areas, resulting in a complex system of internal borders despite being surrounded entirely by the Mediterranean Sea. The largest territory is the Republic of Cyprus, an internationally recognized country that legally claims sovereignty over the entire island and occupies the southern and western regions. In the north, the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus controls roughly one-third of the island, a territory recognized as an independent state only by Turkey. Separating these two rival entities is the United Nations Buffer Zone, commonly known as the Green Line, which stretches across the island and cuts directly through the capital city of Nicosia to prevent conflict. Additionally, the United Kingdom retains absolute sovereignty over two military base areas, Akrotiri and Dhekelia, which remain British Overseas Territories leftover from Cyprus gaining independence in 1960. 🇹🇷
