Free speech or Hate speech? Federation Square, Melbourne, 31 October: families came for the Victorian Festival of Diwali, with music on the main stage and stalls all around. Then a small group with flags and a loudspeaker set up right beside the celebration: &We do not accept the raising of foreign flags, the promoting of foreign ideologies, foreign faiths." Later they carried their flags into the crowd in front of the stage. I saw a couple speaking out against what this group was doing, so I went over to talk to them. Thank you to them for speaking up: "No, it's disgusting." "It's just identifying people who are black or brown to have a problem." "It's definitely not appropriate. I mean, that's bullying." Diwali is a joyous thing, the festival of light that helps us destroy the darkness. Krishna says in the Bhagavad-gita: 'The humble sages, by virtue of true knowledge, see with equal vision a learned and gentle brahmana, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater [outcaste]." (BG 5.18) Srila Prabhupada explains in the purport that ¿these differences of body are meaningless from the viewpoint of a learned transcendentalist," because the same Lord lives in every heart. Black or brown, the soul inside is the same. Judging people by colour or faith is the real darkness, and that is what the lamps of Diwali, and the knowledge in his books, are meant to remove. Happy Diwali to everyone! 🪔🧨🎆
