TENDENCIA · AUSTRALIA · ÚLTIMOS 7 DÍAS

Who really pays for Australia? Only two states put in more than they get back. Everyone says New South Wales and Victoria carry the country. Here's what the numbers say: count every dollar of Commonwealth tax raised in each state, take away every dollar the Commonwealth spends there, and only two come out ahead. Western Australia: about $13,300 a person, $39 billion a year. New South Wales: about $700 a person, $6 billion. Everyone else takes out more than they put in, per person: Queensland $3,035, South Australia $7,594, Tasmania $12,130, the Northern Territory $25,885. Even Victoria, by $77. Most of WA's share is company tax on mining: about $27 billion of its $39 billion. Figures for 2023-24 are the WA Treasury's estimate (WA Government submission to the 2026 Productivity Commission GST inquiry). The ACT is counted in the other states, by population. Which side is your state on? Data: WA Department of Treasury and Finance via Microburbs.
