Remembering the Hungarian Revolution on its 70th anniversary.🇭🇺 Video by @Norbert Lepsik On October 23, 1956, a student demonstration in Budapest became the beginning of one of the most significant events in modern Hungarian history. Thousands gathered at the Bem statue, marched through the streets of the capital and eventually assembled outside the Parliament, where Imre Nagy addressed the crowd. 🇭🇺 As the day progressed, events took a dramatic turn. Demonstrators pulled down the statue of Stalin, and at the Hungarian Radio building, an attempt to broadcast the protesters’ demands ended in bloodshed when security forces opened fire on the crowd. By the night of October 23, armed resistance had begun, and the uprising had entered a new phase. Some of the most intense fighting took place around Corvin köz. Young revolutionaries formed resistance groups and confronted Soviet tanks in the surrounding streets. The area became one of the most important centres of armed resistance during the revolution. Meanwhile other central locations witnessed extraordinary scenes as the city’s familiar streets became part of a struggle for freedom. The revolution brought several days of hope and major political change, however, on November 4, Soviet forces launched a massive military intervention. Resistance continued in Budapest for days, but the uprising was eventually crushed. Thousands lost their lives, and hundreds of thousands of Hungarians ultimately fled the country. October 23 is a reminder of the people who stood up for freedom, independence and the right to shape their own country. Seventy years on, their story remains an essential part of Budapest’s identity. 🇭🇺🕊️
