Costa Rica has moved its first 123 prisoners into a new $35 million maximum-security facility modeled on El Salvador’s approach to tackling organized crime. Located near the capital, San José, the prison can accommodate up to 5,100 inmates, around one-fifth of the country’s prison population. The facility’s strict security measures and images of inmates in orange uniforms have drawn comparisons to El Salvador’s CECOT prison, which holds suspected gang members. The move comes as Costa Rica steps up efforts to combat rising gang violence and drug trafficking.
